Dr. Nie’s research interests are focused on the fields of food nutrition science and technology (including food nutrition and food chemistry, food science and engineering), food safety and analysis, especially focusing on food complex carbohydrates (mainly bioactive polysaccharides and dietary fiber, especially on the structure, conformation and bioactivities of dietary fiber and polysaccharides and the relationship of their structure and bioactivities), as well as new product development of the precise regulation of food components for nutrition and health. He also focuses on developing bioactive ingredients for the functional foods and nutraceutical products, developing novel bioactive polysaccharides and dietary fiber from natural agricultural products, and exploring their applications in foods, medicinal and pharmaceutical industries.

Dr. Nie is highly regarded as an outstanding scientist in Chinese food research area because of his unique perspectives. Due to his excellent research in bioactive polysaccharides and dietary fiber. Dr. Nie has published over 700 peer-reviewed scientific papers (over 500 papers in English, nearly 300 papers as the first author, corresponding author (including co-corresponding author). Dr. Nie has authored and edited 8 books (3 books in English), participated in compiling 15 books, and obtained 45 authorized invention patents. Furthermore, Dr. Nie won some important awards: the Second-Class Award of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2023 (First Recipient), the Second-Class Award of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2016 (Third Recipient), 3 First Prizes of the Natural Science of Jiangxi Province (2 as the first Recipient and 1 as the second Recipient), 2 First Prizes of Scientific and Technological Progress of Jiangxi Province (1 as the first Recipient and 1 as the second Recipient), 1 Second Prize of Natural Science Award of the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award of the Ministry of Education (First Recipient), etc. He was also awarded as Highly Cited Researcher in Agricultural Sciences in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 by Clarivate Analytics and Chinese Highly Cited Researcher in 2022, 2023 and 2024 by Elsevier.
