Personal Information

Dr. Jiawei Xie received his B.Eng. from the Tianyou Excellence Class at Central South University (CSU) in 2016 and an M.Eng. from CSU in 2019 (recommended for admission), during which he completed a joint training program at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). In 2023, he earned his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from The University of Newcastle, Australia, supported by a full scholarship. From June 2023 to February 2026, he served as a Research Associate (Level B) at UoN. His research focuses on digital-intelligent modeling of hydraulic and geotechnical systems, digital twins for slopes and tunnels, intelligent monitoring and risk assessment, and engineering agents. His work integrates artificial intelligence, geographic information systems, 3D geological modeling, in-situ monitoring, and numerical simulation to support digital reconstruction of complex geotechnical environments, dynamic evolution analysis of engineering structures, and data-driven as well as autonomous decision-making. He has been a key participant in two ARC Discovery Projects and multiple industrial projects commissioned by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC). Dr. Xie has authored over 30 papers in prestigious journals such as Engineering Geology and Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology, including 10 as the first or corresponding author in CAS Q1 TOP journals. His work has been recognized with the GEOSNet Best Paper Award (2022) and as a finalist for the AGS NSW Research Award (2024). Active in the academic community, he has served as Session Chair for international conferences including ISGSR, ISRERM, and 5MLIGD. He is a Review Editor for Frontiers in Earth Science and Geotechnical Engineering. He also serves as a regular reviewer for top-tier journals such as Géotechnique, IJRMMS, JRMGE, RESS, and CG. In terms of technology transfer, Dr. Xie developed the RockMapper intelligent mapping software and open-source systems such as Rock-Camera and CrackGen on GitHub. His logging data processing techniques have been adopted by international energy firms like Rybkarock, and his risk prediction systems have been successfully applied in ARTC engineering projects. His project, "Intelligent Geological Advance Detection System," won the Excellence Award (First Place) in the "Chunhui Cup" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for Chinese Students Studying Abroad.
